Fun and challenges are found during Senior Olympic events
Ron Joy and and Janet Battey danced in the Senior Olympics in El Cajon. (Eduardo Contreras / Union-Tribune)Takeo and Mariko Sakakibara barely got back to their seats before the couple's names were called to receive another gold medal during the ballroom dance competition of the 22nd annual Senior Olympics yesterday.
After a four-year hiatus, ballroom dancing returned to the Senior Olympics — albeit with sparse participation — at the Cottonwood Golf Club. Four couples from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio competed in the ballroom competition.
For about two hours, the Sakakibaras and three other couples glided from one corner of the dance floor to the other using techniques that they have been perfecting in dance classes.
COMMUNITY SPORTS: Senior hoopsters still have game

)Dolly Scott has six children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandkids, but you wouldn't guess it based on her shock of deep auburn hair and her surprisingly effective jump shot.
Grace Larsen admits to being in her 80s, but her lockdown defensive tactics on the basketball court make onlookers question how an octogenarian manages to move her feet so quickly.
Scott, an Encinitas resident, and Larsen, of Oceanside, are both members of a San Diego-based basketball team for women 80 and older. That they play basketball in their eighth decade on earth (both declined to give their exact age) is a feat in itself, but their story is even more compelling because their team recently won a gold medal at the National Senior Olympics.

Gold-medal grandma

FORT MOHAVE - Judy Gray is glad she won three medals at the recent Senior Olympics. It worked out well that way.
“My medals ... go to my grandchildren,” said the 68-year-old Fort Mohave resident, who harvested a gold and two silvers at the recent Games in Palo Alto, Calif. “It's a good thing I won three because I've got three grandchildren. They'll each get one.
“Every time I see them, they ask what (medals) I've got for them. They hang them in their rooms. It doesn't matter what place, they just want the medals.”
